Through National Curriculum PE, we aim to help children to:
• develop and extend their physical, thinking and problem-solving skills,
• develop their imagination and creative ability though dance, movement and drama,
• develop specific skills of manipulation, construction, agility and communication,
• gain an idea of fair play and sportsmanship
The school has a well-equipped hall, and PE sheds. The pupils have opportunities to have PE lessons with a range of sports coaches developing various sports like rugby, football, gym, volleyball, basketball, tennis and golf. There are also opportunities for children to play various sports after school with football, tag rugby, netball and cross country clubs during the various terms. We also play competitive games against neighbouring schools. In the summer children take part in a variety of other activities, including athletics, swimming and ball games. Both school and 'area' sports days are held, usually in June and July.
At Wick we are very lucky to have our own swimming pool. It is heated and fully covered so it can be used for much of the year. Children in Foundation, year 1 and 2 swim weekly, usually starting in May through to July and then again in September to October depending on the weather. We welcome parent helpers for this activity, especially those who are willing to get in the swimming pool with the younger children.
In addition, classes of Key Stage Two children attend swimming lessons at Longwell Green Leisure Centre. Swimming at KS2 is a statutory requirement of the National Curriculum.
