Being an Athlete

Being an athlete at Wick Primary

At Wick CE Primary our Physical Education curriculum develops pupils’ physical competence, confidence and their ability to use these to perform in a range of activities. It promotes skilfulness, physical development and knowledge of the body in action. Physical Education provides opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive, cooperative and face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams. It promotes positive attitudes toward healthy and active lifestyles.

Pupils learn how to think in different ways to suit a wide variety of creative, competitive, cooperative and challenging activities. They learn how to plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve their aptitudes, abilities, preferences and make choices about how to get involved in lifelong physical activity.

How PE is taught at Wick

At Wick, we achieve the target of two hours of taught PE a week which is further enhanced with lunch time opportunities and after school clubs.

We currently use PE Planning as part of stimuli for PE lessons. The scheme covers all areas of the National Curriculum and ensures that there is progression of skills throughout each sport/unit which are developed as the children progress through the school. Pupils at Wick are therefore given the chance to develop their fundamental skills across a whole range of sports, including: Dance, Gymnastics, Athletics and Tag Rugby to name a few.

At Wick, we also work in partnership with Bristol Sport and First Sports Coaching, whose specialist sports coaches teach PE sessions for three afternoons a week. This allows the children the opportunity to be exposed to new sports, taught by specialised teachers, as well as providing continued professional development for teachers. The after school sessions organised by the coaches are also extremely popular, meaning our children get the chance to experience new sports outside of the classroom too. They are also given lots of opportunities to take part in various competitions against other schools, led by CSET and Bristol Sport.

We are also a member of the CSET partnership, whereby qualified coaches offer CPD for staff, carry out fundamental skills tests across the year groups and provide lots of opportunities for us to take part in local competitions.

We have consistently been awarded Gold as part of the School Games Mark, something that we have worked really hard to achieve through giving our children as many opportunities as possible to develop an interest in, and improve, their love of sports and PE. We're really proud to have achieved this recognition for the last two years!

How we evaluate our learners as atheltes

At the end of each unit, we assess the children against the taught, fundamental skills for the sport they have been learning that term. Using our PE Planning scheme allows us to easily identify those children who have achieved the key learning for each unit.

Alongside our Bristol Sport and First Sports Coaching coaches, we assess each child against fundamental agility skills. Using the results, we have then targeted invention for those who require it.
